Until recently the scientific community in Korea has refrained from engaging with the creationists, fearing that it could boost the credibility of the group. Silence is no longer an option.

The STR has been fighting to eliminate the content on evolution from textbooks, including the discovery that the feathered Archaeopteryx was an ancestor bird. This is only one example of the way in which the development paradigm has changed.

What is Evolution?

Evolution is a theory of science that explains the change in the genetic traits of living organisms over time. The theory is based on the fact that living things adapt to their environments which can result in changes in genes or even complete genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could result in the creation of new species. The predominant theory of evolution is natural selection, which explains the process that allows people with advantages survive and reproduce more frequently than those with less favorable characteristics. As time passes, this difference in reproduction may result in the creation of completely new species.

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in a variety of different ways as the concept has developed, both in science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists, such as Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that the existing species transformed into other species in a planned manner. Etienne Geoffroy St.Hilaire was Lamarck's embryologist pupil who came up with the term "transmutation" to describe this theory. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that existing species evolve into new species in a gradual and predictable manner.

Recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process when living creatures develop characteristics that improve their chances of survival or the ability to produce offspring. However, non-genetic changes such as the growth in the muscle mass as a result of diet or exercise can't be considered examples of evolution since they are not passed on to future generations.

They claim that the concept should not be taught at school. It is important to understand that evolutionary biology doesn't interfere with religious beliefs, as the theory only deals with objects, events and processes in the physical world.

Many religious people have come up with a way of reconciling evolution with their convictions. Certain Christians for instance, believe that God created everything through evolution and that humans share an ancestral connection to other animals.

It is important for science educators to support the teaching of evolution. Unfortunately, in some nations around the world, anti-evolution sentiment is growing. In the United States, efforts to limit the teaching of evolution have made progress in some states. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise, an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KAC), is campaigning for textbooks to include content on the evolution of horses and their ancestral avian species Archaeopteryx.



While these are troubling developments, it is also important to keep in mind that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution comes from many sources, such as fossils, genetics, and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

The majority of scientists supports the theory of evolution. This support is based on various reasons. Certain scientists study evolution in order to discover practical solutions such as developing new drugs, while others do so to improve animal and plants species, usually for the benefit humans. Some are simply curious, while others have a deep faith in God and seek to understand how the universe functions.

What is Creationism?

Creationists believe that God created all things in the universe. They also believe that the Bible is God's word and should be taken literally. Many creationists are Christians However, not all. Creationists generally fall in two categories: Young Earth creationists (YEC) and old earth creationists (OEC).

The most common kind of creationist is called the YEC. They believe that God created the universe in exactly the way described in the Bible. They believe that the biblical account of the six days of creation is true, and that the universe and the life on Earth was created only recently.

OECs are less well known however they are just as passionate about their beliefs as YECs. OECs believe that the universe and life on Earth are billions of years old and they believe that evolution is an untruth.

Both forms of creationism reject the notion that scientific principles such as natural selection and abiogenesis could explain the origins of life on Earth. They claim that evolution is not possible because it would require an extraordinary event, and that the pioneers of modern science eschewed miracles for fear that they would lose credibility.

Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief "theistic evolution." This is also known as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. Then the evolutionary changes result in new species identical to the original species.

Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that all species were created at the same moment and that they gradually evolved. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the emergence of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, creationists are against teaching of evolution in schools. This position is supported by numerous professional organizations such as the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education as well as the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists are however more flexible and allow both creationism and evolution to be incorporated into their curricula.

What is Creationism?

When people think about the concept of creationism, a lot think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolutionist group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced recently that they would eliminate references to evolution in their textbooks. A group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR) is an unofficial body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research, has led the drive. STR has secured its first victory by removing instances of the evolution of the horse as well as an avian ancestor, called the Archeopteryx, from textbooks. Its sights are now set on removing snippets of Darwin's notorious finch research and on human evolution too.

STR claims that it has the support of 4000 families and individuals. Its goal, it says is to clear the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" which paints a negative view for students. It also seeks to counter the influence of American Creationists in the United States. A survey of trainee biology teachers found that about half do not believe in evolution. The reasons for this aren't entirely evident, but they could be due to religious beliefs or the lack of creation scientists in the United States.

The KACR has achieved many things through its seminars and lectures. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of these was a textbook on natural sciences with a cosmological perspective. It sparked interest among college communities. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught in the present.

On August 6-7, 1993, coinciding with the World Expo opened in Daejeon, KACR held a second International Symposium on Creation Research. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of over a thousand. KACR and its members have been giving talks on creation science at major seminaries too. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
